Introduction to Accessibility
For Global Accessibility Awareness Day 2025, I was trying to design an ebook as a quick reference. Similar to tabletop gaming or video gaming character creation, this ebook was not meant to be an exhaustive resource on accessibility, or even delving into technicalities or specific protocols in HTML or Javascript or ARIA; it is meant as a quick introduction, the equivalent of achieving your very first level or two in a game, the expectation being you learn a little about the following:
- Why accessibility is important;
- Several business cases for accessibility;
- What the curb cut effect is;
- General techniques to implement;
- Resources, in case people want to delve further (i.e, gain more levels).
Other terms for this sort of thing include “taster course”.
There are multiple versions of the content of the ebook.
If you want to purchase the ebook, it is available via Amazon Kindle with no Digital Rights Management. I get 35 cents USD for every copy (US pricing is set at 0.99 USD). This is for discoverability and convenience reasons. A purchase is not necessary, though, because:
- The PDF is free and has the same content as the Kindle version. However, the PDF has not been tested for screen reader compatibility (it is ongoing).
- PDF ebook: Introduction to Accessibility
- The following ebook chapters are on this site for free:
Case Study
The Case Study (Retrospective) is now available for other designers, accessibility professionals, and anyone else interested in the process of creating this ebook and the decisions that went into it.
